One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America’s Future

One Nation

Dr. Ben Carson made headlines with his keynote at the National Prayer Breakfast in February 2013. Standing just a few feet from President Obama, the neurosurgeon offered a common sense critique of liberal government, calling for a return to our historic culture of personal responsibility, free markets, and upward mobility. The speech instantly went viral; The Wall Street Journal even ran an editorial, “Ben Carson for President.”

Now, in this sequel to their #1 New York Times bestseller America the Beautiful, Dr. and Mrs. Carson offer a bold plan to stop the country’s slide into fiscal and moral decay.

Avoiding the political correctness of politicians and the animosity of Washington lawyers, Dr. Carson calls for respectful discussion and disagreement, with no subjects off limits. Applying the problem-solving skills he honed as a surgeon, he takes on tough issues such as education, health care, family values, race relations, taxes, charity, and the role of faith in public life.

In his journey from poverty to the top of his field, Dr. Carson has lived the American dream. He shows how we can save that dream for our future generations, by restoring a moral, informed citizenry that will support “one nation, under God, indivisible.”

    Dr. Carson,
    I became familiar with you long before your speech at the White House, long before the movie of your life. In fact, I read your book “Gifted Hands” shortly after it came out as a 10 year old girl. At that time, my family had just escaped a rough neighborhood (the type that most youths do not manage to escape from) and what you wrote struck a very deep chord in me. I am now 30 and working on my doctorate, in nursing. Your book inspired my years of service in the medical field. As I continue to follow your work, I discover that although I am female, white, and a generation younger, I continue to be inspired by you. I was raised as a Christian and a political Conservative. I hold those values dear and greatly appreciate the stand you are taking. The direction this once great country is taking is troubling, to say the least. I admire your concern on the matter and can only hope that you continue your work. God Bless You.

      Right On!
      I had the good fortune of meeting Dr. Carson about 25 yrs. ago @ Columbia Univ.NYC.
      He was addressing the incoming class of the medical students.
      Invited to be the speaker by Dr. Arnold Gold, head of pediatric neurology, also world famous, who created a wonderful charity for Humanism in Medicine.
      I was there as an initial donor.
      Dr.Carson spoke to the class and the inspiration for all attending was
      fabulous.(my wife fell in love with him)
      He is G_D sent!

    Make that 13 years old. My finger slipped. : )
    Although, I don’t suppose it was typical reading for either a 10 or 13 year old at the time.

  4. I had followed your career through medical articles, but had never see the movie ‘Gifted Hands’ or even noted any of your books until I saw ‘America the Beautiful’. I read it quickly from cover to cover and knew it was the perfect vehicle to awaken my dear relative from her liberal stupor. it did awaken her, open her mine and achieved a political conversion that my years of attempting good conversation could not do. When she returned the book, she told me “Bette, I now understand what you were trying to talk to me about all these years.” Thank you, Dr. Carson; my relationship with my relative has improved immensely.

    Dr. Ben Carson became one of my heroes as soon as I watched the video of his speech at the prayer breakfast in front of the president. I thought, “Wow, he’s right on target! He employs simple common sense analogies and solutions to the problems we face.” He is a giant among men, IMHO! Keep up the good work, Dr. Carson! And God bless you & your wife & family.

      I have been a great admirer of Dr. Carson for many years, and agree with much of his philosophy. However, I think it is not unreasonable to ask: did this great man ever benefit from any SOCIAL SERVICE? Did he ever benefit from AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN ANY WAY? I am merely curious.

      • Peggy Keeler on August 26, 2014 at 7:21 pm said:

        What possible difference does that make. Imagine that someone who improved his life from needing financial assistance to giving assistance to live to hundreds of people. That is the only positive thing that social assistance can do. If no one was ever able to improve themselves due to Welfare I would vote to dismantle it ASAP. That is the only reason to have it. Financial aid perpetuates lazy worthless people who do not know how to better themselves. This man did the impossible through the help of his Mother and his Brother. Together through the Grace of God he is a marvelous example of the American dream. God Bless Him and God help you to open your eyes to goodness.

      • Although I have read the US Constitution I don’t declare to be an expert on the document. I can however say with some accuracy that I don’t think God is even mentioned in the US Constitution. The Declaration of Independence only mentions it once.

        Maybe you are thinking about the Pledge?

        I even looked for it in the Articles of Confederation and still didn’t find what you were talking about.

        Anyway, I would definitely vote for Mr. Carson over the alternatives.

    I am very impressed with your way of thinking and possible solutions; however, you don’t give any suggestions on how we can get congress, most of the national media stations and the president to even consider anything except their agenda. They (predominately the president and all his men) just want a socialist state. My fear is that the upcoming 2016 election will again go to the democrates because of most media stations don’t give both sides as they along with the president don’t think we have a brain in our head and decide what is best for us. Please, everyone, we must keep America in our prayers. Thank you Dr. Carson for your insight. I would love to have a presidential candidate who thinks along your lines.

    Dear Ben (feel like I know you), Have purchased all your books and ordered “One Nation”. All your books have been passed on to my grandson, T. Ryan Owens, who you interviewed for residency at John Hopkins. An automobile accident that nearly killed him helped to decide to become a doctor and your books to be a neurosurgeon. Ryan will complete his residency at Duke in June, 2015 and has accepted a position in Columbus, Georgia. After I found out you interviewed Ryan, I had to interview him.
    Keep up your dedication for the sake of a great nation that George Soros and his puppets are intent on ruining. Through twelve years of schooling by nuns(grammar school) and priests(high school), I was always taught to pray for our nation’s moral good. Sincerely, CTS USAF 1948-1952

  14. Dr. Ben,

    I am looking forward to reading your new book.
    I recently read “America the Beautiful”, and loved it. I recommended it to all my friends and relatives.
    I hope you reconsider running for President. It is not likely that someone with your values and morals will be nominated and elected. So it is up to you to take the reins, and thereby ensure our country gets back on the right track.
    I really do not see any alternative.

  15. Dr. Carson,

    Would you please run for president of ther United States in 2016. I know this is a lot to ask of you sir, but this country, our country, needs a man like you who has what is best for the American people in his heart.

I hear of the horrible things happening in North Korea, Venezuela, Iraq and even the Ukraine, and I shudder to think what it would be like living in a society where we aren’t allowed to believe in God. Where we are told what to believe and do. I feel America sliding this way and it needs to stop. Do these atheists really know the harm of a Godless society? I don’t think so.

    Dr. Carson,
    After hearing your prayer breakfast speech I started believing there truly is hope for this country. God is going to use you to help heal our nation! Thank you for giving that brave speech! Last year I had just lost my Dad to pneumonia after a Phoenix hospital released him too early even after begging for him to stay a few days longer. The Doctor assured me his lungs were just fine! My Dad died two days later of pneumonia! Even as a 30 year veteran nurse I could not help my dad and was devastated! Obamacare is horrible and some of my older nursing friends are also seeing what impact it is starting to have in a further decline of an already troubled healthcare system. What ever I can do to help your cause I will do and am already doing by talking to as many people as I can on how we must stop this horrible program. Obamacare will hurt our elderly so very much! Please consider a run in 2016… we need you! You will have many praying protection over you and your family just as we did for George W. Bush, although he made some poor decisions near the end, many believed he was a man of God with a servants heart.
    God Bless you and your family!

        Dear Cathy Hood,
        Thank you so much for your kind reply.You are so right. I do realized that God’s timing is not always our timing. God did call him home in His time. My sadness with my Dad was his stated desire that very day he died was to live into his 90’s. He was 86 years old at the time of death. My whole family and even my Dad thought he was improving from the pneumonia. He was an amazing man who lived through polio in the early 50’s and was disabled by it. While many would have felt sorry for themselves for losing their ability to walk normal, not my Dad. He never quit. At the age of 28 he went on to continue a teaching career for 33 years. Raised a family and not once asked for assistance from the Government. What a strong sole he was. His story would be so good for the youth of this nation to hear just like Dr. Ben Carson. A story of self reliance and personal responsibility. Thank you for your comment to Dr. Carson. I too feel that he has been chosen to serve our nation much like George Washington did and help to heal our nation by allowing God to work through him. Just like you I will continue my prayers for our country and for Godly people with a servants heart to come forward just like Dr. Carson.

        Take care and God Bless you,

    Dear Dr. Carson,

    …er; President Carson,

    I have been watching you. No, I’m not with the NSA.

    I just heard you say on FOX news; “I still maintain that politics is not something that’s in my bucket list. I would only do it, if I felt I had to do it.” That was the invite that prompted this letter; this plea
    from a fellow American. The now rare breed of American which connects you and me. I know you ‘feel you have to do it’. Trust that.

    I was called to teach CCD some fifteen years ago. Like so many souls before me; I said yes, with doubt and trepidation; as I was well aware of my limitations. I was reminded of the reaction Moses had when he was called;
    and, that turned out well. When I was called to teach, I had no idea how well that would turn out for my students and for myself. Just as Saul/Paul did not seek out his spiritual vocation; or as many millions since;
    I did not seek out my spiritual vocation. However, I now have a rich, deep, and abiding faith; because of this yes to God’s call.

    YOU ARE BEING CALLED; and, not just by me. God and Country need you, sir. I know it in my soul; and, I believe you know it in your soul. I happily risk sounding overly dramatic here – I BEG YOU TO GO FOR IT!
    You are the TRUE hope of this nation. There is no other.

    Through these dark years; we, the faithful have watched. We have prayed. We have prayed for deliverance from this evil; and finally, there you were. Every time I have heard you I trusted more and more that you were chosen.
    You know this. If not, you would not have had the courage to tread into this fearsome den thus far. PLEASE trust the guiding hand of God to lead you through this daunting dark valley. Dig deeper,
    and find the necessary courage to finish this race. You are destined for The White House. BUT, you must choose; as each soul ever has. It’s simply, yes or no.

    God and Country are calling you, sir. Will you say no to Country? Will you say no to God?
    No pressure.

    I promise you, sir; that I will help you do this. Just call me. My answer to you is already yes.

    With all my heart,
    C Hood

    Conservatives need a single, simple, resounding theme, not just pointing out the painful failures of the current administration. I suggest the following:

    BALANCED: A balanced federal budget amendment;
    FAIR: A fair, excise type tax to replace an ever increasingly tyrannical IRS and unworkable code;
    RESTRAINED: Restrained federal government size, restricting spending to a fixed percentage of GDP.

    As a black, 65 year old black woman, I am very proud of what you have accomplished. I knew of you and your work before the movie because of the conjoined twins but I am not in agreement with your political views. Am I a democrat, yes. Am I for ACA, yes. As someone who works in the health inurance industry, I know what health care cost. I guess our government paying $1 billions dollars a year to hospitals here, in Ohio, alone is not socialist? What is the difference? do you get more bilking the government than you will under regular insurance? MY family has never been on the dole, do not have teen pregnancies, criminals. I had BOTH my parents and did not grow up poor. My four sisters and I had a wonderful life and we all have college degrees to masters. We have seven children in marriages, DUH!! With fathers in the homes and upper middle class values raised in a baptist church. Our seven children are all college from in progress(6 & 7) to bachelors. Our youngest, married, mother of 4 BGSU grad has been accepted into the UMASS psych program. I still will not vote republican. I would have voted for Gov. Kasich, here in Ohio, as late as last year but with the low life shenanigans of you right wingers, I will never vote for another one again in my life and voted for Voinovich and others. You try to take away my vote. You speak of Benghazi, yet, you do not speak of the 12 bombings and over 100 dead and injured under Bush. Why is that? In fact, one was in a ‘friendly’ country, Saudi Arabia. Come to think of it the, funds to Osama Bin Laden came from the same place. Speaking of which, where is the kangaroo court for WMD’s and the deaths of over 4 thousand of our children and tens of thousands of Iraqi? How about the voting of more powers and money to NSA by congress under the patriot act a month after 9/11? I did not hear your voice against that infringement of our privacy, especially, when they digitzed everything, on their dime, to listen in on computer data. Where was that cry of socialism, freedom, rights of man, then? Oh, nothing, right. Just when a black man becomes president, you join with the very ones who ostricized you for being a doctor in the first place. Now, you fit in with them. That makes you a monumental hypocrite. My parents were sharecroppers kids from Louisiana and they moved north and worked hard to give their daughters everything they needed. Took us on vacations. Put us through college. No debt when we graduated. No debt when our children graduated. The last two on scholarship and #6 is in her third year on dean’s list and is an asian language scholar and speaks fluent Japanese and writes it, also. The two males are family men, no records, drugs, college graduates. My son is a computer graphics engineer and my nephew is business manager. I still will never vote for a republican for dog catcher. The next generation? My grandson 11, read Harry Potter at 3, his sister, 8, was published at 6 and in kindergarten was tested to read and comprehend on a 6th/7th grade level. Sisters 3 & 4 are avid readers at 6 and 4. My son’s only child, a 2 year old daughter, already has a 100 sight word vocabulary. That’s us without any hand out and on our won what we have done and i can do it for the whole family because my children are third generation college graduates. Grambling is the family alma mater.

    • I am sorry for you. Not to vote for Dr. Carson is a travesty He is the next President of these United States of America. You can quote me.

    Mr. Carson. I have seen you on T.V. just a few times; I have not read your books nor know much of your history. I do know that you were treated unfairly recently by our Government based on your comments – not just symbolically, that is a slap in the face to each and every one of us.

    As a matter of fact, a bigger slap to the nation’s face, affecting every sole, is the implied sentiment (by our Government and citizens who either enable their behavior or live in denial) that the constitution / bill of rights is the cause of all our problems today.

    But that is just the lie they perpetuate as the only problems the constitution / bill of rights seems to cause is, well, problems for the run-away administration itself; because functionally, if it were followed, it would not allow the type of behavior they emit – so they ignore the letter of it, and using it in contempt against the American people – to serve themselves…

    simply put – sad.

    I stand by and support your efforts 100%

    I hear rumor and see postings about a possible presidential position. My hope would be that you stay grounded in your mission no matter what path of travel you take and not let anything distort, dilute, or blind you – that which could debilitate what you are trying to do…

  46. Dear Dr. Carson,
    I want to send you a quote that inspires me and my family:

    “I want to teach you this: Love God and love people at the price of your life. Then you can gain your own life and gain all people also. That is what God wants from the bottom of His heart, and that is what Jesus wanted us to be like. When Jesus prayed at Gethsemane, “Father, let this cup pass from me, if it be possible. Nevertheless, not as I will, but as Thou wilt,” his heart was that of a son who loved only his Father. On the cross he loved even his enemy and prayed for him. There had never been such a man in all history previous to him, and there was no such man after him. That is the sign of his having loved the whole of mankind. That is what made Jesus the greatest. If you can do that much, you cannot help but be the friend of Jesus, or the bride of Jesus. You can have his Father as your own. You can have everything he had.”

    Dr. Carson … from my perspective … the future of our once great nation is in peril. Without someone of legitimate reputation and deep intellect leading our country … I fear for the future of our children and grand-children. In addition … I recall that we’ve been summoned … “that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain”. Our nation is approaching a “Gettysburg” moment … NOT from a military perspective … but from a cultural perspective, an intellectual and attitude perspective. Will we be able to repel the enemy of religion, free speech and intellectual honesty at the high water mark? Or will succumb to the tyranny of progressive manipulators who care nothing about our entire nation … but only about their ability to wield the levers of government power in order to keep a “once free and pioneering nation” under the authority of centralized bureaucrats.
    Please Dr. Carson … take up this challenge. Run for President! You are the leader our Nation needs at this crucial time.

  48. Bless you, bless you, bless you, Dr. Ben Carson. May God lift you and your family up and put a giant hedge of protection around you and everyone. Praise God for your steadfastness.

  49. I became inspired to believe this country is meant for greatness after hearing your speech at the pray meeting breakfast. I sat in awe as our current leader truly was hearing your words and i was so glad that moment took place. Sometimes it is in those brief snipets of time one can realize that we are all in this together. Dr. Ben in you we as a country and a people have been given a gift.
    I am a nurse practitioner and i see on a daily basis how the ACA is destroying our healthcare industry and marginalizing the quality of care we are able to deliver to our patients. I pray that you think long and hard on whether you feel you should run for President. I am praying for you and your family. Thanks for being a true Patriot…

    America the beautiful was given for us and for all;
    A shining light midst the fallen dominions.
    Keep her seeking Heavenly truths above all else,
    And the whole world is saved.
    God bless America, now and forever more!

    America the beautiful,
    America the great.
    Her people come from everywhere;
    Her heart comes from above.
    Her soul lights the world;
    and all are glorified in His name.
    Praise to the Pilgrims,
    Their dream lives!

    Given 11-26-13

    America needs you now.

    Best regards,

  53. Dr. Carson, perhaps we can start to save America by saving our veterans? I watched the CiC’s news conference today and what was lacking was immediate help for veterans needing care.

    I have a feeling you will be called upon to lead our great nation as President. There is an opportunity for you to show your leadership skills to help our veterans. A private/public non-partisan partnership is something to consider. I have some ideas how to make this happen. Contact me if interested.

I am sure they will raise the money, however I am not sure if the little girl will hold much longer.
    If you can email me, it will be awesome, so I can detail her situation a little bit more !!!

    “The Fate of Our Nation”

    Good Afternoon!

    My reason for writing this afternoon may seem unusual to you since I’ve not been politically active or even wanted to look at the ills of our world in the news in recent years. However, I believe this country is in real trouble; and if we fail to act responsibly now, the United States as we know it may soon cease to be.

    Politicians and others are leading us down the path to sure destruction with their socialistic give-away programs, which entice and push many people to go on the dole, and encourage mass dependency upon the government rather than encouraging independence and creativity. Knowingly or not, such leaders are extremely short-sighted as to where the funding for all of these programs is coming from and how long it will be before our entire way of life collapses under the sheer weight of the very real cost in indebtedness to other countries and lack of productivity within our own. Add to this the continued erosion of our school systems which are failing to provide and ensure an outstanding education for our youth, and it becomes obvious that we are on the road to destruction.

    Recently, however, I have discovered that there is a man who is intelligent, honest, articulate, and has excellent credentials; and he has a very realistic plan to guide this nation back to the path set out for us by our founding fathers. You may or may not have heard of him. Hallmark recently showed a movie about him called, Gifted Hands. His name is Ben Carson, MD.

    He was raised in the tenements (ghettos) of Detroit and Boston by a mother with only a third-grade education. (She had married a minister at 13 and later left to raise her sons alone when that relationship didn’t work out.) Yet, she knew she wanted more for her sons; and she worked as many as three jobs in order to ensure their survival. Thus, when she saw that the boys weren’t doing well in school, she turned off the TV, made them do homework every afternoon, and had them read two books per week and submit book reports to her. She would peruse each report carefully then put a check mark at the top of each. The boys didn’t realize that she was functionally illiterate and couldn’t read a word.

    At first, the boys resented the fact that they couldn’t be out playing with their friends, but they soon found reading to be a wonderful escape from where they lived. It also encouraged them to aim higher than they ever thought they could. And their grades skyrocketed due to improved vocabulary and a very real interest in a wide variety of subjects. One son became an aeronautical engineer. The other, Ben, graduated cum laude, earned a scholarship to Yale University for his undergraduate degree in philosophy, attended the Medical School of the University of Michigan for his M.D., and did his residency in pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At 33, he became the youngest Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. A truly gifted surgeon, he is best known for having been the first to successfully separate cranial-conjoined twins. During his amazing career, he performed ~300 surgeries each year. He and Candy, his wife of 30 years, also founded the Carson Scholars Fund, a charitable organization that provides scholarships for students who display outstanding academics coupled with humanitarian service; and they set up reading rooms throughout the country in schools that have no library. Dr. Carson recently retired from his duties at Johns Hopkins, but continues to write and lecture throughout the country. (Ben and Candy continue to operate the charity organization. They have three grown sons and two grandchildren.) A former member of the President’s Council on Bioethics, Dr. Carson is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Honor, the highest civilian honor in the country.

    I just finished reading the book, “America the Beautiful Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great” by Ben Carson, MD with Candy Carson. It is well-written and very thought-provoking. And it talks about what our fore-fathers intended, where we are now, and offers some very real solutions. Next I plan to read the Carsons’ latest effort, “One Nation What We Can All Do To Save America’s Future”. (It costs less than $25 for both books on Amazon.) I encourage you to read both of these documents. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. It’s the most positive message I’ve seen in a long time! I know you’re both inundated at work, but please don’t put this off.

    I hope Dr. Carson will run for President in the upcoming election. I feel he is a real breath of fresh air, one we sorely need as a nation. The fate of our nation is up to each of us. Will we recapture the true democracy upon which this nation was founded and built; or will we simply be another great nation to fail under the weight of mass greed, short-sightedness, and lack of caring about the legacy we leave for future generations?

    It will take a concerted effort by every single caring person in this country to change our direction from one toward ultimate failure and destruction to one of hope and striving for success. Reading these books is one way to be sure you make an informed decision in the next national election. Please encourage as many others as you can to do likewise.

    I love you both and I want you to enjoy the brightest future possible!

    P.S. Here are some internet links about Dr. Carson that might interest you.

    Your comments on FOX about the shooting in Ferguson, MO were hurtful. We have heard this cops side of the story. It is a lie! The Bible says to establish your words by “two or three witnesses”. That has been done. (Go on the internet and see the interview videos for yourself!) His version is unestablished and a lie! You said to recognize that cops are individuals, most of us understand cops are individuals. Understanding that FACT, we know they don’t always do the right thing (as many assume), they lie and they murder! The only thing that young man was guilty of was WWB (Walking While Black)! That cop is going to hell for murdering that young man and lying about it! Speak on what you know and not what you don’t know! You are hurting others with your words of ignorance!

      Gee: Analize your words and as hard and painful as it is, remove emotion in your analysis. I pray everyday for the parents of Michael Brown a life that was cut too short. I wait for our set of government laws to render the results of an investigation. We are a Country of Laws and we have escalated from the times of slavery and lynching. The way you are reacting, reminds me just of that. Your message is: I think that the Cop is guilty and I will apply my justice now. Pray my friend and wait for our justice system to render a verdict. If we were not satisfied at that point, remember we have appeals and legal reviews. Justice will be done the right way! May the Peace of the Lord be with you always!

    Dear Dr. Carson;

    I have recently finished reading your book “One Nation”. It was well written and very insightful, and I agree with most of what you presented. I do take issue with one thing though. If you accept that Yahweh has given mankind an absolute moral standard, then how do we as believers find any compromise with the Secular World that does not violate His law? I believe Rich Christiano articulated this position best in his movie “Time Changers”. In summary, you cannot teach His Moral Law apart from Him. Bless you and your family.

  94. Dear Dr. Carlson;
    Everyone I know has such high respect for you. You would make a fine president. The thing that will keep you from getting elected is your view on letting the people that come over the boarder stay here. about 20% are children, the rest are adults, some gangs. Also are included are gang members. I believe this is part of Obama’s plan to put this country down. Our schools, towns, hospitals cannot deal with them. Crime, including rape is at an all-time high. Illegals are hurting poor Americans to get job training/jobs. A program to deport them should start today.

    I know how you feel about “letting them stay is the right thing to do” but it will put our country down. Please consider helping them return to their own countries. Hope you are our next president, VP or in the cabinet.

    Dear Dr. Carson,

    I enjoyed your book very much. I encourage you to seek the Republican Party nomination for the office of President of the United States. We need you.

    That having been said, I am troubled by the statement you make on page 197, “I do not know whether the earth is six thousand years old or not.” Real science, not the junk science that we see too much of in the popular press, establishes that the earth is a lot older than six thousand years. That is something that everyone can “know.” As a Christian, I find no conflict between true science and my faith. There is none. I encourage you to reconsider your view on that issue. If you do run for President, a statement such as that will be used against you.

    Thank you for all the good that you have done and continue to do.

    page 65 last paragraph first sentence: …senators and congresspeople…
    Senators and Representatives are “congress people” why is it not correct to say senators and representatives? Were you or the editor trying to be politically correct and didn’t want to use congress men? To me, the very politically correctness you sort of frown upon – you used.
    page 150 last two sentences: Why is the sentence limited to: “her” …anyone… implies male and female yet the sentence is limited to “her”. To me, it should substitute their for her and at the last word substitute them for her. (?) Perhaps your wife added this sentence and that would explain the “Her”
    page 199 second paragraph: second sentence: …to save her, throwing her a lifesaver, etc. Again, what happened to the male? Perhaps your wife added this sentence too?
    Anyway, Great book! Great Observations! Thanks

    About two months ago, I took a flight from Lusaka, Zambia to Honolulu, Hawai’i. I brought with me a number of books; one book that I brought in particular is Dr Ben Carson’s ”Think Big.” In that book, there are key leadership points thats were addressed which I identify. One of the books that I have not yet read is ”Take the Risk,” and I am looking forward to getting myself a copy. I mean, the interesting thing is we all have different risk appetites. Yesterday evening, I attended Convocation and listened to Lonnie Melashenko talking about ”One Nation,” but what he said next really got my attention. He said ”Ben Carson might be running for President.” That sent me into panic mode, because in August as part of my ‘Planning for Success’ one of the people globally, that I indicated that I would love to meet as part of my ‘Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) Personal Action Plan (PAP)’ is Dr Carson. Although I am happy that Dr Carson is thinking of running for the highest office, it is also worrying because everyday ordinary people may never get as much as an opportunity to speak with him. Dr Carson has done a lot of work in my country including separating the Zambian siamese twins. I am even more afraid now, because after convocation someone said to me that they tried to get Dr Carson to come to Hawai’i, but they needed to have USD 25,000 to do so. Yikes, I don’t have that money. Anyway, my goal is to read my dusty copy of Think Big once again on my flight to South East Asia next weekend for my field study and to relate that to the Enneagram model. That is my story and right now I am not sure that I will be succeeding with my PAP.

  115. Read “One Nation” this past weekend. Inspired me to start researching your background and recent appearances on the national scene. Very impressed with your common-sense approach to matters and as an Electrical Engineer I agree fully with your assessment that more logical thinkers need to get involved in issues and fewer “win at all cost” lawyers. Also agree the vast majority of people I encounter have the intelligence to see through the devices used by the media and pundits to manipulate the masses but most are too busy watching television to care about what’s really going on in our nation and the world. If you decide to run for President in 2016 I will do all I can to help. (Sorry about the lack of pronouns at the beginning of sentences…it’s an Engineering thing…)

    Our nation was founded on a firm belief in God and the principals of Freemasonry. Nine (9) signers of the Constitution were freemasons and six (6) later became freemasons, so in all fifteen (15) of the thirty-nine (39) signers held masonic values and principals of liberty, individualism and respect for our fellow man, and the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., was laid out according to masonic sacred geometry and is loaded with masonic symbolism.
    I’ve been a 32 degree freemason since I was twenty-five (25) (I’m seventy-two (72) now) and I’ve seen many changes in my country that sicken me. Prayer taken out of public schools, Christ taken out of Christmas, demonizing our churches and faithful, rewriting laws and sometimes history to accommodate non-Christian religions, I could go on and on. I’m a conservative and I’m completely disenfranchised from the Republican Party, which has become the party of comprise rather that the party of leadership. If our country is to come back to conservatism with conservative philosophies and policies, it isn’t going to be through our republican leadership, who can’t come up with a charismatic leader of presidential character or quality, and keep pushing the same old retreads at us.
    I’ve seen you on television, heard you on the radio, and I’m half way through “One Nation” and I believe you are the one charismatic leader who can bring this nation back to conservatism with conservative philosophies and policies. I understand that you do not hear a calling from God to enter into politics, but perhaps you can hear a nation calling….pleading.

  121. I thought the analogy in chapter I of how the plane trip trouble was obscured by Alaska’s beauty in much the same way America’s beauty hides the dangers we face was great.

    A lot of wisdom is contained in this book, as Abe Lincoln said;”everyone is my superior in that I may learn from them,” and in like fashion Dr. Carson seems to approach with humility and vigor every situation and person he encounters.

    The uselessness of Division in governing is discussed at length and at the end of chapter 8, as Sun Tzu – the father of modern warfare said, “knowing thy enemy is invaluable.

    Sometimes it appears as if the enemy is not just that which is obvious but arising out of our own government as well.

    Maybe it would serve the nation better if term limits were to be imposed and monetary compensation for government service were done away with on a national basis so those who truly seek to help would and perhaps might even value their time better if they knew they weren’t being paid handsomely to squander it.

    America has never needed real leadership as we do today. We need a patriot who can put together a government ,who can guide our nation without constantly hand-cuffing our efforts. Our freedoms are being reduced and removed, once we were an example for the world on how to live a good productive life , leaving a legacy on which future generations could build on. Today it is hard to imagine the next generation’s lives being anything but a constant struggle against the government ‘s constant social engineering. There are no voices in DC which are getting through because the president has an agenda not for America but for continuing power and constant control over how big the AMERICAN DREAM should be, there is lesser and lesser reason to work hard if the government keeps telling us we owe more to the government. It used to be alright to be a good citizen, now we are expected to subsidize a growing population of takers who do not bare any responsibility towards doing their part on keeping America healthy and alive. America is the ONLY place where FREEDOM and LIBERTY can prevail, Ben Carson would be a good person to unite us and inspire us, I think he would be a president for All America!!!!

    Just finished reading One Nation. A solid dose of common sense on all subjects which has been sorely missing in Washington for decades. The only thing that disappointed in the book (p. 52) was your reference to Trayvon Martin. You assume the watchman did something wrong. I know you assumed this because you go on to say”…we can learn something about how neighborhood watchpersons should be trained…”. Why didn’t you suggest having parental classes on how to teach their children to be civilized, law abiding individuals. That aside, the book provides logic on some delicate subjects.

    Dr. Carson, I am half way through your excellent book. You make all the logical points I have been advocating for years. If I didn’t know better I could swear I wrote this book myself! I know many suggest that you run for President, but this would be a mistake as you would become part of the system instead of the voice of reason for all. But I would happily donate to a fund that would allow you to give a series of speeches on prime time TV on all stations at once, like the State of the Unions Address. It is truly the only way to get your message to the masses. I know the liberal media would probably never allow this, but you never know what a Kickstarter campaign could do! Thanks for speaking out for those who see the handwriting on the wall.
